1. Wednesday, May 12: Meet in Rome; The Capital of Ancient Pagan Rome

Noon:                    Faculty will be at fountain for individual questions, problems

                              Orientation Exercise

400:                       The Imperial Forums, the Capitoline Hill, and general intro to Pagan Rome

Noon:                         Scavenger Hunt to get to know the city

330:                            The Capitoline Hill and Capitoline Museum (and cafĂ©!)

3. Friday, May 14: Roman Forum, the Civic and Religious Center of Ancient Rome

Morn:                         Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Aft:                             Ostia Antica, the port city of ancient Rome 

 

4. Saturday, May 15: Augustus and the Empire; St. Peter and the Papacy

Morn:                         Ara Pacis, Mausoleum of Augustus, Castel S. Angelo

1:00                           Group Lunch (group meal #3)

Aft                             St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City, and Borgo 

 

5. Sunday, May 16:  Galleria Borghese (Bernini, Bernini, Bernini)

Morn:                       Free time: Race for the Cure (Optional). Terme di Caracalla at 10:00 am

Aft:                           Galleria Borghese and Class on the Grass 

 

6. Monday, May 17: The Vatican Museums: the Renaissance comes to Rome

Morn:                         Piazza del Popolo and S. Maria del Popolo

Aft:                             The Vatican Museums: Sistine Chapel, Raphael Rooms, and more!

 

7. Tuesday, May 18: Full Day Excursion to Orvieto: the Sack of Rome and a Papal Refuge

Morn&Aft:                  Duomo, Chapel of S. Brizio, Papal Palace, Pozzo di S. Patrizio etc.

 

8. Wednesday, May 19: The Campus Martius and the Quirinal Hill

Morn:                       Campo Fiori, Pza. Navona, S. Luigi dei Francesi, Pantheon, Sopra Minerva

Aft:                           Quirinal Hill: S. Carlino, S. Andrea al Quirinale, S. Maria della Vittoria

9. Thursday, May 20: Early Christianity in Rome; Science and the Papacy

10. Friday, May 21: World War II in Italy; Fascism

                             The Grotto of Tiberius, Sperlonga and its beach

 

11. Saturday, May 22: Christianization of Ancient Rome/Modernization of Christian Rome

Morn:                    The Aventine Hill and Santa Sabina. Christian appropriation of pagan philosophy

Aft:                        S. Maria in Trastevere, Class on the Risorgimento on the Janiculum (Gianicolo)

12. Sunday, May 23: Course Review

13. Monday, May 24: Final Quiz
