Welcome to Culture Wars in Rome!
Culture Wars is a three-credit upper division humanities course (HUEN 3700) offered through the Herbst Program of Humanities in the College of Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. 2017 will be our thirteenth year, and we have taken an average of 20 good students in each of the last twelve years. Students come from all colleges at CU, with most coming from the College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences.
In addition to two full weeks in Rome, we have four classes in Boulder in March and April. All classes in Rome meet at the historic sites in the city (or selected nearby towns); there is no classroom except the city itself. We spend a good deal of time together for two weeks, which is in fact one reason the program has been enjoyable, and then we disperse for whatever additional travels we have arranged for ourselves.
Most students generally get together after the program and head off to Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre, the Amalfi Coast, or other parts of Europe. Some travel for just a few days, others stay longer. A few race home for summer jobs or other commitments.
We are too busy in Rome for students to prepare a serious project there, so final projects are not due until July 1.
